See, this is the neat thing about the BMW Car *Club*, you can set up the event all by yourself. You could contact any of the board members to get advice on what to do and help with getting the word out (announcement in the Bombe, on the web site, etc). But in terms of getting Custom Alignment to host something, it's all up to you. Have fun! :-) Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4

#4. Inspection 1, What do I need to replace? - from shane.a.kleinpeter@accenture.com

Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2001 19:05:54 -0400 From: shane.a.kleinpeter@accenture.com Subject: Inspection 1, What do I need to replace? Hi everyone, This is sort of lame, but I left town this morning (like I always do on Mondays - I'm working in Cleveland) and forgot to check my Bentley manual. I want to do an Inspection 1 on the car this weekend and need to order parts. I can't remember if this is the one with just oil change and then a bunch of checking fluid levels etc. or not. The car has 57k miles on it, is a '96, and has been to about 15 driver's schools in the last two years since I bought it Certified Pre-Owned. I bought the car with 38k on it, and the dealer had performed an Inspection 2 on it as part of prep for sale. I have basically done nothing but oil changes (every 4500 miles with Mobil 1) and changed the air filter after a particularly dusty day at CMP this spring. Water pump and thermostat were replaced under warrenty this fall, and I replaced the power steering hoses (all of 'em) this spring as preventative maintanence) Brakes are flushed regularly, of course, and the front calipers have been rebuilt twice. What all do you think I need to change since the SI lights are blazing? I'm thinking plugs and a microfilter, but what else. How about fluids, like rear end and tranny. Any input appreciated. Thanks, Shane Kleinpeter Tarheel Chapter '96 M3

The car simply won't start. It's not a battery problem, as it's only a month old, and there is constant power throughout the entire car when the ignition key is turned. And it's not some other stupid problem either, like for example lack of gas. I'll have to tow it to the shop. What other symptoms could there be? I already said it's the starter. I just wanted to hear things like "when it happened to me I had to get a new one because BMW starters are not fixable, it'll set you back $1,000", or "it happens a lot with these cars, that's just this and that, and they'll fix it in no time", or "it could be one of three things..." But again, I proved to be wrong. This is definitely not my day. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joe Dyer" <joedyer@home.com> To: "Luis Veras" <veras@tricom.net>; "E36M3" <e36m3@bmw-m.net> Sent: Monday, June 25, 2001 6:57 PM Subject: Re: [E36M3] Re: "It looks like a Honda," > Luis, > > Please take a break for a while! Joe Silva, the owner, walked through all the capabilities and issues surrounding wheel mounting and alignments. It was pretty informative, although P car specific. I was very impressed with Custom Alignment's capabilities with tire mounting and balancing. They are a beta site for hunter and have all the latest and greatest equipment. I would highly recommend trying them out next time you are getting new tires (they accept drop shipments from TireRack). I would love to have a similar event with a BMW focus, but am not sure who to contact within CCA/GGR. Anyway, While discussing wheel construction issues and how they affect tire mounting, Joe was using an M3 wheel as an example and pointed out the unique bead lock technology used by BMW. Some of the P-Car guys got real put out and one even asked, "Do you mean that BMW has a technological edge over Porsche in wheel design?" When the answer was yes, you could tell they did not like it. I of course just stood there silently wearing my M3 t-shirt : ) (not that the M3 has many edges over the 911 but any little thing helps) jeff ************************************************************* List Commands UNSUBSCRIBE - (in subject line) unsubscribes you from the mailing list. Yep, that's really lame - I never leave the house in the morning without checking my Bentley manual <BFG>. Sorry Shane, couldn't resist. > I want to do an Inspection 1 on the car this weekend and need to order > parts. I can't remember if this is the one with just oil > change and then a > bunch of checking fluid levels etc. or not. Looked in the Service & Warranty Manual, and Inspect I involves an oil change and replacing the microfilter. All the rest is just "checks". > I'm > thinking plugs and a microfilter, but what else. How about > fluids, like > rear end and tranny. Any input appreciated. Plugs wouldn't be a bad idea (according to the book they're every Inspect II aka 40,000 miles; I usually replace mine every Inspect service, I or II, so every 20,000). Microfilter is a "yes". Tranny & diff fluid wouldn't be a bad idea either. Again, FWIW, I've been changing mine every 30K. Hope that helps, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - back and good as new (well, as good as it was last week; "new" is way far gone :-))

Make any kind of noise? I had the starter go bad twice on my 97 M3. The first time it made all kinds of noise first. The second time it just went "clink" and that was it. Do you have the clutch pushed in all the way? The 96 and newer M3's won't start unless the clutch is in all the way. Just because the lights are on and there is gas in the car doesn't necessarily mean it has to be the starter that is bad.
